1098-T FAQS

What is a 1098-T?
The 1098-T form is used by eligible educational institutions to report information about their students to the IRS. This form is informational only. It serves to alert students that they may be eligible for federal income tax education credits. It should not be considered as tax opinion or advice. While it is a good starting point, the 1098-T, as designed and regulated by the IRS, does not contain all of the information needed to claim a tax credit. There is no IRS requirement that you must claim the tuition and fees deduction or an education credit. Claiming education tax benefits is a voluntary decision for those who may qualify.

What am I supposed to do with the 1098-T form?
Keep it for your records. Since the University sends your 1098-T information to the IRS, there is no need to attach a copy of the form to your tax return. Consult with your tax advisor to determine if you may claim the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) or the Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC).

91Ó°ÊÓ is not required to issue a Form 1098-T to:
  • Nonresident alien students, unless requested by the student.
  • U.S. citizen, resident alien and nonresident alien students whose qualified tuition and related expenses are entirely waived or paid entirely with scholarships or grants.
  • Students whose tuition and fees payments were only for non-credit courses, even if the student is otherwise enrolled in 91Ó°ÊÓ’s degree program.
  • Students whose qualified tuition and related expenses are covered by a formal billing arrangement between the college and student’s employer or a government entity.
  • International (foreign) students who are not U.S. residents for tax purposes and who do not have a Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) on record with the college.
  • Students classified as non-resident aliens who do not have a Social Security Number or ITIN on record with the college.
  • If you paid for your enrollment fees but dropped all your classes and received a refund during the calendar year, then you would not receive a Form 1098-T.
  • If your address on record is out of date or you did not request address change form, your Form 1098-T may have been returned to the University.

What if I forgot to request 1098-T for previous years??
The 1098-T is issued on year-by-year basis. 91Ó°ÊÓ cannot issue 1098-T for previous years.

Can I get a copy (photocopy) of 1098-T for previous years?
No. As we mentioned above that the 1098-T is issued on year by year basis. Therefore, 91Ó°ÊÓ cannot issue a copy of 1098-T for previous years.

What is the deadline to request the 1098-T form for tax year?
The deadline to request 1098-T form is on December 31st each year. The annual deadline for 91Ó°ÊÓ to file the required tax information electronically is January 31, although data may be transmitted earlier as circumstances allow.

WHY IS MY SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER (SSN) OR INDIVIDUAL TAXPAYER IDENTIFICAITON NUMBER (ITIN) REQUIRED FOR THE 1098-T TAX FORM?
  • Federal regulations require students to furnish their Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) for federal reporting requirements. These requirements apply to any student, regardless of whether the student seeks or intends to seek the American Opportunity Tax Credit or Lifetime Learning Credit.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that your information is accurate by December 31, 2024.
  • A student who does not provide their SSN or ITIN upon request by the educational institution can be subject to a fine imposed by the IRS.
